After a terrible B Series last year, the team was relegated to the C Series in the last rounds. In the Northeast Cup they made it through the quarter-finals but were eliminated by Vitória, losing both 1st and 2nd leg matches. In the Potiguar Championship, they had a good participation and were dominant in the first half of the competition, guarantying the lead and qualification. They faced their rivals ABC in the final won the title after a home draw and an away win.
 
In the 1st leg match of this round, América started strong and surprised the away team. By the end of the first 30’ they had a three goal lead. But Atlético recovered in the second half and scored 2 goals, reducing the advantage. However, that was not the end of it, since América score once more and won a good 2 goals lead for this 2nd leg.
